The Golf has been nicer than the Jetta for the last 2 generations, so with that budget I'd buy a Golf (unless you need a bigger back seat). When choosing a Golf, you can choose between the efficiency of an unreliable mk7 1.8T or the reliability of an inefficient MK6 2.5L. Maybe if you get a TDI, you can bridge the reliability-efficiency gap a bit. Yeah, Unfortunately the first few versions of the RCD-510 (non navigation touch screen radio) made by Delphi were crap. I would suggest replacing it with the RCD330 which can be had on Ebay for pretty cheap with more functionality.With cars so expensive today (both new and used) it seems like around $23K for a Sport is a great deal. Don't pay more than 6k for that car. I have an 2011 SE with 48k miles. You have to riding all day to get to 100k in an 11. Also, it's an S, so it's pretty bare bones.The nice thing about the Jetta is that it is a jack of all trades sedan where it has decent driving dynamics, decent interior, clean design, and decent economy. It's neither the best at anything in its segment, nor is it the worst, just good across the board.If you're just going to drop a k04 into a jetta/golf just buy a GLI/GTI. But if you have the patience and the desire to build a unique car, then FBO 2.5 or a turbo 2.5 would be the way to go.
